Conservatories
After studying classical music, Mezza graduated with top marks in Jazz Music at the S. Cecilia Conservatory in Rome. He followed several paths of study, including the Chromatic Masterclass with D. Liebman (East Stroudsbourg University, Pennsylvania). Mezza has opened concerts with the Wayne Shorter Quartet, the Peter Erskine trio and Mike Stern’s Band, and has played in Canada and the USA, Germany, France, Cameroon, Switzerland, Croatia, Hungary, Japan, South Africa, Armenia and Australia, He is regularly invited to represent Italy at numerous Italian Cultural Institutes and Italian Embassies around the world and was the only Italian pianist at the Time Montreux Jazz Piano Solo Competition 2005. With several CDs as a leader, Mezza also has several publications - such as Pianogrups Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 (BERBEN Ediz.); Birth from a bird - for piano and Memories of Love (Florestano Ediz.); the treatise New Improvisational Paths - Advanced pentatonic techniques (Libreria Universitaria), and Fragments (UTORPHEUS Ed.).
Top Jazz 2006 included Mezza in the category of best new Italian
talents, and he has received numerous positive reviews from major international newspapers and magazines. His music is listened to from Europe to the Americas, Asia, the Far East, Africa and Australia and has been selected for the jazz records of ALITALIA airlines, with the cd Vittorio Mezza Trio ranking among the records of the year for Jazzit Magazine’s Referendum Jazzit Award Price 2010.
In the United States he was nominated as composer and performer at the Just Plain Folks Music Awards 2017 in Los Angeles for the following songs: AFA, from Vittorio Mezza TRIO (Abeat Records) and YOUNIQUE, from the cd MMP (Abeat Records).
As an arranger and pianist, he has led several projects including Dances in My Mind with Dominic Mancuso in Canada, Napoli Jazz Songs with his Canadian Trio, Convergence with Mark Ginsburg in Australia and South Africa, MMEQ with David Milzow in Germany, and Libertà va cercando in Italy and Japan.
The album Convergence - Mezza Ginsburg Ensemble was selected as ‘Best CD of the Year’ in the ‘Best CDs of 2018’ Jazz Awards category of the Indie Acoustic Project USA.
Mezza has collaborated for many years with Italian Rai Radio Television. Currently active in the academic field, he holds the Chair for Jazz Piano at the Frosinone Conservatory, and has held Jazz Piano and Jazz Composition Courses at the Casa del Jazz in Rome, the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome, Reggio Calabria, Mantua, Perugia, Verona and the Electronic Keyboards Course at the Conservatory of Bologna.
